DESCRIPTION: A large and finely sculpted head of the Buddha, the round face finely formed with serene downcast eyes, conveying a feeling of great gentleness and devotion. The crisp rounded brows meet at the narrow straight nose, ending in bud-like pursed lips which curl in an enigmatic smile. The head is covered in tightly curled knots over pendulous ears. Like the best of Chinese sculpture, this regal yet accessible representation of the Buddha successfully transforms Buddhist doctrine into inspirational shape.
The encrustations inside the carved lines, as well as the lightly mottled surface of the dark stone suggests an age earlier than the one given, especially when compared to the light scuff on one upper eyelid or the small chip in the right ear which are obviously more recent than the sculpture itself. We have priced this as a 19th C. piece however, as we do not have confirmation of its age. The head rests on a separate trapezoidal base. DIMENSIONS: Including base, 21” high (53.5 cm) x 11” wide (28 cm) x 13 ½” deep (34 cm). Shipping to be handled by Craters and Freighters.
