SOLD<br /><br /> DESCRIPTION: From the Amazon rainforest of Peru, the Shipibo-Conibo are an indigenous tribe known for their distinctive pottery and textiles. Their unique, intricate geometric designs are sophisticated interpretations of their cosmic beliefs that the jungle rivers follow the same course as the stars. Collectors world-wide clamor for their coil constructed pottery, made by the women of the tribe. <p>This very large, outstanding female figural vessel has a wide, double lobed body and dates from 1960–‘70. The neck of the vessel is formed with a single face having characteristic low relief ears and nose, and painted slit eyes and mouth. Adorning the face and spreading over the round body are mesmerizing, mazelike linear geometric motifs, all in chocolate brown and russet red on a creamy white ground, with the flared rim and lower half of the vessel covered in rich russet red. The cone shaped lower half is also typical and was usually buried into the ground to keep the contents cool. The “Antisuyo” sticker on the bottom denotes the name of the gallery where it was originally exhibited and sold. Excellent condition with very minor scuffing at places along the lobed rim.
